If you are seeking employment in Rockland County, you are covered under the Rockland Fair Chance in Employment Law. This law is a “Ban the Box” law and applies to employers in Rockland County with 15 or more employees.
Under this law, employers cannot post any advertisement that expresses, directly or indirectly, limitations or preferences in employment based on a person’s criminal record. An employer cannot ask about a pending arrest or criminal record until they have judged you on your non-criminal qualifications and have offered you a conditional job offer.
There are a few exceptions to the above. An employer can ask about your criminal history if you are applying to work in law enforcement. The law also does not apply if you are applying for certain sensitive county jobs, especially if the position can be influenced by bribery or involves working with vulnerable populations.
